How does Thermage work?

Well the best description goes like this. If you have ever watched RPA then you probably will have seen the surgeon using a ‘diathermy’ tool. This is a device that seals blood vessels and it does it by using Radio Frequency Energy (RFE). You will have seen that the device is connected by a cable to a small benchtop machine which is the RFE Generator. What you probably wouldn’t have seen is that the patient wears an adhesive pad with a return cable to the benchtop machine, thereby creating a RFE circuit – machine to tool, tool delivers RFE sealing blood vessels of patient, patient back to machine. Well, instead of focussing the RFE at a single sharp tip on the diathermy tool handpiece, in Thermage the RFE is spread over a larger surface area before returning to the benchtop machine, via the path of least resistance. And that just happens to be, you guessed it, the Collagen network in the skin of the patient. As the RFE passes along the Collagen network it changes the molecular structure of the Collagen, causing it to tighten.
