Why is it so hard to change my shape?

Genetics play a large part in your basic body shape as they determine how the number of fat cells will be distributed in your body. It is also important to note that the number of fat cells in your body does not change, only the size of the fat cell changes.

Fat cells are designed to store surplus energy for our body’s future use. If we eat more than we need, the surplus food is converted to fatty substances called lipids. The lipids are then stored inside the fat cells and if this happens repeatedly, the fat cells will bloat up with lipid material and become thicker. The complete opposite happens if we don’t eat enough or when we exercise more. The cells then give up their stored surplus lipid and become smaller meaning our fat tissue becomes leaner.

Weight control and exercise can only change the size of each fat cell but not the number of cells in your body. Essentially, this means your overall body shape remains the same, even with rigorous diet and exercise, leaving your individual problems areas proportionately bigger (perhaps upper arm, back or inner thigh). The only way to change your shape is to remove fat cells from the affected areas to reduce their numbers. There are only two options to do this – liposuction surgery or by lipolysis, another word for cell dissolving.

An alternative to liposuction surgery

Liposuction is an invasive surgery that carries several risks and is not suitable for everyone. CoolSculpting, however, is a non-invasive technique that penetrates into the fat cells and exposes them to controlled cooling.

The technique is based on the fact that fat cells are more vulnerable to cooling temperatures than surrounding tissues. The applicator is attached to the target area to treat the underlying fat tissue while protecting other tissue such as the skin, nerves and muscles. The cooling effect causes the release of naturally occurring body chemicals and other inflammatory mediators which gradually digest the affected fat cells in the months after the procedure. The affected fat cells are then gradually eliminated, reducing the thickness of the fat layer.

What are the benefits of CoolSculpting?

Unlike liposuction, CoolSculpting is non-invasive which means it comes with several benefits:

  • Anaesthesia is not required to perform CoolSculpting
  • No surgery means less risk, no scarring and no significant recovery time
  • The procedure is quick and usually takes around 45 minutes to complete

While the results of the CoolSculpting procedure are not as rapid or dramatic as invasive procedures such as liposuction, it can still reduce the treated fat layer by 20-40% over time. The final result will be noticeable after two to four months.
